Tips, Tricks & Techniques- Masking

Like most stampers, we love to learn new techniques that we can use in our projects. One way we learn about these is by going to team meetings, Stamp Share for Leaders & Stampin’ UP! events. We love to teach fellow demonstrators and crafters these techniques to not only make really cool cards, but to also improve efficiency in making multiple cards at a time.

To kick things off we are going to share with you the Masking Technique.

By masking an image you are able to layer with your stamps or cover up an image to create a background behind your image. There are a few ways you can approach this technique.

The first and easiest way to mask is with scotch tape. This is an easy way to take bits and pieces of sentiments to create the perfect set of words for your card. Use a piece of tape to cover up the unwanted part of your stamp, ink it up, then remove the tape before stamping on your card. You can layer sayings together to create the perfect one to fit your needs, or eliminate an image from your stamp all together.

The second way is by using a post it note, or something that has a slight stick. What you will do is stamp your image a few times on several post it notes making sure to stamp as much of your image on the adhesive edge as you can. You will use this to cover up your image on the cardstock to help you create a layered look. Take your paper snips and cut out your images from the post it notes. Once you have these, stamp your first image on your card stock, then cover it up with your cut out masks. Then line up where you want the next image and keep repeating until you have the look you like. This is the perfect technique for creating this Meerkat family.

Check out this Stampin’ UP! Video for more details on making this meerkat family.

Lastly, you can use a mask to help you create a background on your card similar to this one. Mom stamped this family on a piece of Whisper White, then on a post it note stamped the same images, cut them out and placed the masked family over her card. She then used sponges in ink to create a soft sky and some sand under their feet without getting it on the family that she had colored

Masking is an easy way to take a card or a stamp and make it exactly what you are looking for! We love using this technique for our every day card making.
